If you’ve bought a new property on the Costa del Sol, you will know that Marbella shines in both summer and winter. Sun, sea and spas are here to enjoy year round without having to jet off to distant destinations.
A lot of people love Marbella all the more during the winter months, when outdoor activities are often even more fun without the summer heat. Come September, the throngs of tourists reduce to the savvy few who enjoy a stroll along the sea front in shirtsleeves, or lunch al fresco in the warm winter sun.
Action
Enjoying a spot of sport is part of the Marbella lifestyle, be it a hike or bike in the hills or a longer trek up La Concha – Marbella’s famous summit – a day on one of the multitude of golf courses, a jaunt out to sea on a private yacht or even a dip in the water on a particularly warm winter’s day.
Another popular activity in the area is following the Caminito del Rey near Málaga, a spectacular walk that takes you alongside and 100 metres up the El Chorro Gorge.
For the even more ambitious, there’s always skiing at the Sierra Nevada ski resort, just 2,5 hours’ drive away – ever heard of people boasting of skiing in the morning and basking on the beach in the afternoon? In Marbella it really does happen.
Food
Once the action is done, you’ll have earned a good meal out at one of Marbella’s excellent restaurants. And it goes without saying that in a location with around 320 days of sunshine per year, you can still eat and drink outside on terraces and at seafront restaurants (chiringuitos) with the sand at your feet. When the wind picks up, there’s always a cosy option in the form of a traditional Spanish venta or Marbella restaurant with stunning views over mountains or sea.
Day trips
When the summer rush is over, there’s time to hit the road and visit some of the nearby white villages like Istán and the seaside town of Estepona. Just a few hours’ drive can take you to some of the most famous and historic cities, like Granada and Sevilla, along with smaller gems such as picturesque Ronda and Mijas.
Indeed, the winter experience is an important part of the lifestyle that sets Marbella apart.
