There are several places that spring to mind when one mentions the Costa del Sol, from the original family package destination of Fuengirola to bustling Marbella and cosmopolitan Puerto Banús for fans of designer clothing and luxury yacht spotting!

However in recent years another town is surging in popularity and for all the right reasons: Estepona has become a favourite of families and couples due to its regeneration as the ‘Garden of the Costa del Sol’, with the streets lined with beautiful year-round shrubs and plants and the Old Town walls lined with their cheerful plant pots holding yet more blooming flowers.

One of the biggest attractions of Estepona is the charming port, which to this day retains a working fishing fleet – the second largest after Málaga. Stroll past the fishermen’s lockups to the beach side of the marina you will see them mending their nets when they’re not landing their daily catch.

The paseo mariíimo, or sea promenade, which runs almost the length of the Estepona beach, leads into the pretty harbour with its many bars and restaurants facing the rows of boats berthed there. The marina restaurants offer something for everyone, with of course, great Spanish restaurants serving wonderful fresh fish and seafood dishes, to Indian, Chinese, Italian and many other cuisines.

One of the most famous features of the marina is the market, which has been taking place here every Sunday morning from 09.00-15.00hrs for the past thirty years. The sea promenade bustles with life as locals and tourists alike throng to this market, one of the best known on the coast. A great range of goods can be purchased here, from jewellery and clothes to leatherwork, with a lot more variety in between.
